Lose Your Life - and Find It!
Inside the world-renowned building of Westminster Abbey hangs a memorial stone for John and Charles Wesley that reads, “God buries His workmen, but carries on His work.” The Wesley brothers are well-recognised for the impact that God made through their lives, and their legacy lives on despite them having passed away many generations ago. Like these brothers, we too can choose to be obedient and faithful, becoming like rocket boosters in the hands of God.
WILLINGNESS TO SACRIFICE OURSELVES
Paul explained this to Timothy before his death in 2 Timothy 4:6 (NKJV), “I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand”. He realised and expressed that his life was expendable for the sake of the gospel, but he was also satisfied that he had contributed something important.
WHAT DID JESUS SAY ABOUT SACRIFICE?
Jesus spoke about this in Mark 8:35, “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.” In our world today this concept is a tricky one to grasp – we are taught self-preservation and protection, but Jesus flips this on its head by saying that we should be willing to lose our lives in order to find them.
WHAT ARE YOU LIVING FOR?
Friend, what are you living for? Are you living for your own ambitions, for others or for personal gain? Think about where you are investing your time, finances and energy. What is it you have a passion for? God desires for us to be on fire for Him and passionately pursue Him at all costs to ourselves.
GIVE YOUR LIFE TO THE GIVER OF LIFE
As Jesus says, we need to be able to be ready to give up our lives for the sake of the gospel, and only then will we find life. And this sacrifice is not in vain. Our God is the Giver of all Life – and He graciously rewards us when we are prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice for His Kingdom. How many of us are up to the challenge that Paul, and the Wesley brothers seemed to so deeply understand.
Let’s be challenged… are you ready to lay down your life to find it?
