What do we do when God calls us to do something impossible?

There are so many books and resources available today for Christians looking to grow and deepen their relationship with God, but besides all of these things, the position we should desire to be in is depending entirely on God.

Sometimes this means that He asks us to do things that seem impossible. But we can know that nothing is impossible with God...

CHILD-LIKE FAITH

If self-help books and encouragement were enough, we wouldn’t need the Holy Spirit but it is God’s desire that we rely on Him and look to Him, just as children rely on their parents. We are told in Matthew about an interaction that Jesus had with a child:  “He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:2-4)

NOAH’S ARK SEEMED IMPOSSIBLE

When Noah was commissioned by God to build the Ark, the sheer scale of it was daunting. It needed to be large enough, but also built to perfection in order to float. In fact, engineers have studied this and the dimensions of the ark were designed in such a way that the proportions were ideal for being sea-worthy. There’s no way that Noah would have known the best dimensions to use, but God gave him very specific instructions. Noah didn’t need to be an expert of boats, but he just needed to listen and be obedient to God.

PROMISE OF THE IMPOSSIBLE

Many of us will know the story of Abraham, and the promise that God gave him that he would have as many descendants as the stars of the sky. However, to Abraham, and with nature, this promise seemed impossible. Abraham and his wife Sarah were far beyond childbearing age, and nature was against them. There was no way biologically it should have happened – however God is not limited by nature or His creation – and He fulfilled His promise to Abraham.

JESUS THE IMPOSSIBLE GIFT

Jesus himself was the impossible gift given to us. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and so Mary, who was a virgin, was able to carry him and give birth to Jesus. This came following the angel Gabriel delivering  a message to Mary to tell her that she had been chosen for this purpose, and despite this seeming completely impossible, she chose to trust and obey God. Mary, of course, went on to give birth to Jesus.

NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE

Luke 1:37 tells us, “For nothing will be impossible with God”, and Jesus spoke many times to say that “with God all things are possible.”  These passages demonstrate how all things are possible for God. He is not limited, and we are called to obey His calling on our lives, no matter how impossible. God always fulfils His promises, and all we have to do is trust Him.
